The main thought process here was to create a modular station. Except for the middle part of the station all other parts can be removed and changed. I hope i got that idea translated well.

Technically it was some modelling in Vue and quite some postwork in PS.
It was on my list for a while now, waiting for the right chance. A colleague of mine is working on a script and asked if i could visualize some ideas. I hope it helps him and spawns some ideas. This here is one of the ideas i had.

It was something new for me and therefore fun to do it. Basically some rough modelling (if you can call it modelling...) in Vue. Also rendered in Vue with some touch ups in Photoshop.

Vue is your friend! When you’re not exactly the most talented painter then Vue really helps you to create a base for your idea. The weird rock formations/mountains were quickly modelled in C4d and imported to Vue. Ecosystems added a plantlife quickly and kaboom… it’s rendered. Then the fun can happen in Photoshop. This painting is, again, some sort of training piece. Basically i wanted to create a strangely familiar, yet exotic, looking place. It’s also a different colorpalette. Surely a nice addition to my portfolio. When you check the plate (link beneath the description) you will notice how much work was done in Photoshop. Basically i used digital painting to extend different elements and got me some good photo textures to add the level of detail i wanted. The ships were added late in the process and are completely painting. Now i would love to explore this planet with one of those ships!

Hope you enjoy this world as much as i do!
And basically, as an artist, you should never be 100% happy with what you do. Just to stay motivated and inspired. Now with this piece i’m almost 90% happy. And that’s a lot.

I’m a sucker for backlit, sunset scenes so here we have another one. I would also say that this is pretty much a matte painting quality again. Haven’t tried myself in that for a while. Now the plate i rendered myself with Vue really kicked a**, and i wanted to make it look somewhat photo real. The rendertime needed for the plate was something around 26hrs. I also got some nice photo reference material from a good friend and used some in my painting. Roger...! I love you.
That means it's something i invested a special amount of time into. I started with c4d and daz3d city blocks. I took them apart to isolate the models i was interested in, and used the cutted models to build me the structures you see in the pic. It was a lot of fun to take something apart to create something completely new with it.

The final render was composed with vue and also rendered in different passes. Basically for each hero element i rendered a single picture. All in all it were surely 40/45hrs of render time.

Photoshop kicked in to bring it all together. As well for enhancing and adding different effects. With help of painting and manipulation i tickeled the juice out of the renders i made.
Now recently i found some time for it. Basically i wanted the clouds to be the main thing in the pic... so i painted a little ship that's on the way to somewhere. I always imagine myself sitting in that ship... and watching these amazing huge clouds fly by. That would be a lot of fun i think!

Technically it’s Vue 7 for the clouds and sky. I was playing around with filters in Photoshop and, of course, the ship was created with help of my wacom and some custom brushes. All in all 7hrs for the rendering on my Laptop machine and 2hrs to finish the pic up in Photoshop.

I’m on a landscape trip these days. I guess i need a break from the Sci-Fi theme. Now on this project i learned a lot about Vue again. As always. This time i worked with own textures and checked out how terrains handle it, how i can effectively use this technique for my future projects. While, of course, there is Photoshop work in here… it definitely is less than usual. I had to overpaint a few areas that did not come out like expected. I also reworked the colors and atmosphere a bit… as well as changing the clouds. So in the end it’s 50/50 between pure Vue and postwork with Photoshop. While i was indeed targeting a more photorealistic look i couldn’t resist making the atmosphere a bit more vivid than it would actually be in a photo. Ultimetaly it adds a new combination of colors to my overall gallery and therefor also adds more flexibility.

No specific story behind that picture except the fact that i wanted to make it look earthly… yet… other worldy in its overall appearence. Hope i succeded! Hope you like it!
No big story for this one. Just fiddled around with vue and photoshop - just for fun. That’s why the basic look of it is kinda dirty and gritty… concept arty. I kinda like the result that offers a nice depth to the eye. Technically i was messing around with texures and brushes in photoshop. The difference in this painting basically is the perspective that hopefully makes the viewer feel as if we’re flying into the city. I had the actual cave background plate render on my disk for a while now and used this project to see what the new machine can do. I’m pretty happy with the results i got from this project. Computer speed wise as well as painting result wise. I really used Vue a lot here to render out different elements for the background and foreground. I’m not entirely happy with the results but i did my best to make it look somewhat interesting. Again it’s a try in digital matte painting combining rendered elements with photo. A friend of mine always said that i need something snowy for my portfolio and so i did it. I did not have any specific concept in mind for this one except the fact that i wanted crystals in there. The crystals were modeled in C4d and imported into Vue. There i created an eco system and painted them onto the landscape. Worked pretty good! Only the integration process in Photoshop was quite difficult. Some pieces are fun to work on and others can become quite heavy work. This one was work. Nonetheless i hope the stormy mountain atmosphere works and you’ll get some goosebumps from the cold the image shows!
One on top of another. Like it's kind of happening in Hong Kong today. Your position in society is reflected by on what level you live. Now this society has risen up so high that it couldn't stand on its own feet anymore. Society, as well as the architecture, starts to fall apart. The ignorance of wanting it all more bigger and larger than large doomed them to break apart. Only a few search and rescue teams, all volunteers, mustered up the strength to go out there. Millions of people trappend in this catastrophe, finally realizing the downfall of their, once so strong and inspiring, empire.

Well, that could be one of many interpretations of what's going on in the picture.
I made it in a rather unusual way... at least when it comes to my personal work process. This time i really painted something. Without any help of 3d plates. I started to understand the importance of custom brushes. This painting captured me and kept me going. From my POV it's one of the best pieces in my portfolio so far. Time to be proud. =D

It started as a tiny just for fun concept. Actually i created a flyer design and wanted to have a rough environment around it to make it simply work/feel better. In the end the environment forced me to throw out the flyer design... since i really liked what was happening there on screen. I added photo textures to suggest detail once i had all the shapes laid out for me. Later on i worked with lots of adjustment layers to get me the right lighting and atmosphere for the environment.
At first i made the environment fit together along with a nice lighting. Rather in the end i added this city like element which is kind of a haven for all kinds of flying vehicles. It’s clearly fantasy and i like the wideness of it. Pure photoshop work this time. No help of 3d elements. Nonetheless, in the end, a typical matte painting i guess.
Have had a hard time with the characters there, since i'm far away from being a character artist. On the other hand i managed to bring together some nice architecture. So the good and bad things balance out each other which results in a satisfying feeling from me for the pic.
The scene in the pic is a very special scene from the actual story in the book. Our main character becomes enlighted by one of the gods of his world.
And all life springs off mysterious mile high mountains that can bind the energy of the planets inner forces to create an ecology that is unique throughout the whole known universe.

Here we have another digital matte painting. This time i worked a lot with photos and less with 3d or painting. It was quite a task to get all the photos look right with the lighting etc. I don’t think i succeeded 100%. Nonetheless it’s, for me, a quite nice result. Something different for my gallery.
So i thought about finishing it up... and so i did. I maintained a concept art look since i thought it helps the pic to come together. I played a lot with different ideas, which caused the long work time.

Hope it works.
this pic was intended to become a fantasy book cover but unfortunately there were complications and it was not used. so i decided to invest more time into it. you can see the final result here. i basically worked with matte painting techniques to make the image look like i wanted it to be. worked with lots of photos i took a few weeks ago in the alps. this pic is quite different to my other work so i'm pretty happy with the result and think it's a nice addition to my portfolio.

please let me know what you think. thank you

this pic was a commission job. goal was it to create a heavenly kind of world. this pic is something very different to the scenery work i did so far... so it was quite a challenge. there are a few parts i'm not too happy with but in general i'm proud of it. i started with concepts. used own stock photography for this piece to build most of the elements in the pic. i extended these parts with paintings to make them fit my needs.

astounding was created a few months ago. i wanted to create something freaky looking and so i played with a fractal program named apophysis. the results reminded me on the effect they created for that riddick movie on that one hot planet/moon... when the sun comes up and throws that cool looking spirals. the sun in my piece looks a bit more friendly. the landscape was rendered in terragen. i added a lot of elements, incl the apophysis render, via photoshop.
